Rescue 12: Parkhurst Farm (Shed 1): 9 birds removed prior to partial depopulation
august 9, 2004

Six rescue team members worked all night with two parts to this rescue/investigation. Four activists entered the sheds around 8:00 pm. These team members filmed and rescued nine very ill and crippled birds, spending forty-five minutes in the shed; the birds were just over six weeks old. Conditions continued to be very bad inside the shed. The lights were on, which made it easy for the rescue team to find ill and crippled birds.

The birds were agitated and hungry, trying to peck at the camera, as the feeders were raised up near the ceiling. This signified that a depopulation or partial depopulation would occur shortly. According to the Code of Practice for the Land Transport of Poultry, all sick and injured birds are to be removed prior to depopulation. Rescue team members removed nine birds from the shed, other than this, we didn’t witness any other birds being removed prior to the depopulation even though there were other ill and crippled birds the rescue team were unable to take out. These birds would have been among those seized four to five in each hand then tossed into the crates by industry ‘catchers’ a few hours later.

Several team members positioned themselves at the shed with infrared camera equipment to witness and film the depopulation. The huge chicken transport truck arrived at 12:30 am, while the fork lift truck arrived at 1:00am and started loading the birds onto the truck. This truck left at 3:00 am while another one had arrived around 2:45 am. Twenty-five minutes of depopulation was filmed during this time. Meanwhile other team members tended to the badly dehydrated birds that were removed from the shed. Three of the birds died within hours and the other six were all euthanized by the vet due to their poor condition, none were able to stand up.
