Rescue 15: Parkhurst Farm (Shed 1): 9 birds removed
december 11, 2004

Three rescue team members entered Shed 2 and stayed for approximately forty minutes. The lights were out and the ammonia smell was exceptionally bad inside the shed. There was also a bad smell of dead birds outside the sheds.

The doors to Shed 1 and 2 remain without any handles or locks. They were being held shut by rocks and a plank of wood leaning against the door. The birds were estimated to be approximately five weeks old.

Many birds were crippled, injured and struggling to walk. Some birds were smaller than others and did not appear to growing at the same rate. There were many feathers on the floor; it looked like a partial depopulation had occurred in the shed. Nine ill birds were removed; five were severely crippled and/or splay-legged and could not stand or reach the food or water.

One bird was found huddled against the wall who was blind and frail. Another bird had a large hanging crop. One tiny bird was unable to reach food and water and was in very poor condition. We gave the birds food, water and rest after leaving the shed. The birds were taken to the St Kilda Veterinary Surgery and five out of the nine were euthanized on humane grounds.
