Rescue 16: Parkhurst Farm (Shed 1): 3 birds rescued
march 3, 2005

It is almost three months since the last rescue. Three rescue team members went to Shed 1 to see if the doors were still without handles and locks. The door was held shut with some rocks piled against it; an on-going bio-security risk for Parkhurst Farms. Team members spent approximately 35 minutes inside the shed. The chicks were only three or four days old.

It was very hot inside and the lights were bright. The chicks were scattered over three-fourths of the shed and there was paper rolled out over the floor surface with some shell grit type material and food particles spread on it. The smaller crippled birds were unable to access the water nipples.

The three rescue team members were distraught to find several dead bodies, crippled and sick birds in such a small area near their entry point. They rescued three chicks; one died within hours and the vet euthanized the other two the following morning. One of the birds was severely injured and missing part of her beak, which was bleeding.
